Basta sila Kuya Xav, Ate Anna at yung mga mods ang heads ng E.B. committee, hintayin na lang natin announcements nila kasi panigurado nahihirapan silang maisulong yung proyekto nila dahil sa busy ang ating banda.

even bigger than kitchi nadal and the only thing stopping them from reaching the number 1 in the local music charts is nina. that is a feat in itself considering that they;ve only been together for a year. they've got it, ang thor belanon reads between vocalist champ lui-pio's dimples and finds out more about the musical phenomenon that is hale.

love sucks.yeah.lalala.it's really a wonder how we continue to fall fortype of song over and over again. Once in a while though, there comes along a band that captures the sweetness of this jagged bitter pill that we swallow all too often than we should. hale crafts heavenly music out of hellish experiences. From heasrtbreaks to uhm, extreme heartbreaks, their self-titled album chronicles a love's death foretold. We've all heard the gory details;we've all been there. but it's the telling that separates the good from the bad the soaring from the boring. if there's one thing that defiens hale, it's the soaring choruses. and the tumbling down the gaping abyss of sadness afterwards. which could be a bumpy ride so stay clear of scattered beer bottles.

the start of something big

saturday, it is the levi's 501 concert series in libis. the night is humid, but it really doesn't matter. a tsunami of girls, sudden and sparkling, rushes to the stage with cameras held high. hale takes enter stage and begeins to play.

enjoying an early buzz with the release of their first single"broken sonnet"-which would make shakespeare do triple turns in his grave, but really, who cares for overly critical english majors like myself-hale iout to prove their musical worth. presently, the band is billed alongside established bands like urbandub, sandwich and sugarfree. onstage, they hold their own beside the veterans. lead vocalist champ lui-pio is self-conscious, blinking from the bright stage lights while absent-mindedly pulling down his tight shirt. but when roll martinez[guitar], sheldon gellada[bass], and omnie sarroca[drums] begin playing, everything changes. like a quick wipe screeare no longer boys. they are rock stars.

after their set, the band and i moved to a quieter venue. under the dim yellow lithey relax and become boys again, eager to tell theri stories. champ takes us to the beginning,"hale was formed july 2004, wala pa kaming one year. i already knew roll back then, and roll was sheldon's classmate in ust, so that's how we met up."

"the name of the band was the hardest," champ continues."the songswere there, all that was lacking was the name. we wanted something short but catchy. so i picked up the dictionary and stumbled on hale. yung meaning nya:'to pull with force,sound in body' bagay siya. it describes our music: the sound comes from within, like the way we write our songs."

unlike other bands that first went indie and played underground gigs, hale chose a different path. the bgand focuseon playing hteir originals. after investing on a full length demo that they recorded in 2 months, they immediately sent out copies to record labels. after a few months of rejection, hale finally got signed. champ smiles widely as if remembering christmas,"emi called us up a day after hearing our demo and immediately they wanted to see us perform. we got signed in november. the label gave us space para bumwelo for the album."
omnie adds, " someone made a comment na ang hale hindi sumabay sa trend. gumawa na lang ng demo tapos may album na. parang effortless talaga. wala yung pagpapapansin. natural lang talaga ang pagtugtog at pagsamasama ng banda."

roll, tha main song writer and lead guitarist of the band sits quietly. he speaks slowly and gently, not unlike the tender confessions that define his............[guys naputol dito...it will resume to this....]

i was 15. it was the focus on our own material that mae us serious about the band. and when we got together to play originals, it weas like, i don't know, magic"

while borrowing a few tricks from radiohead and coldplay. hale still able to create a soaring sopundscape that is distinctly their own. champ describes their music as "melodrama" which stands for melodic-drama. " we have happy songs, but the album really has a sad undertone. still, the heartbreak in the songs really happened. kung mabigat sya[shrugs], that's what really happened.[the songs] are really honest. hindi pilit. but wee never expected the onverwhelming response to broken sonnet.

with such great penchant for melodrama, which almost feels instinctive, one wondersif they all lead dramatic lives. champ smiles and nods. this is not the first time he is asked this question."in the timeline of the songwriting, yes we were all verydramatic. sawi kasi kami lahat! but we're sad not all the time. nagkataon lang. lahat naman ng tao nalulungkot. malay mo sa second album, masaya na kami."

understandable, really. though their self-titled album carries a few toe-tappers, it is the sad songs that naturally gravitate to. sadness makes us all related;it is our law of gravitya law that tugs our hearstrings and catapults bands up the charts. still, unlocking our inner loser could be quite tricky. overdo the sap and it's baduy kaya. overexert the growl and it's just plain scary. hale just does it right.

with endearing honesty, and careful attentiondetails, each member's dedication to the band is freakishly focused. after graduating in 2003, champ never thought of applying for work. he pursued music, hale in particular, with grave intensity.

going to the studio, the band was detrermined to record the best album they were capable of making."some of the tracks in the album were written 4 years ago, and we took our time to develop the songs. and i think the key in songwriting is to let the songs grow and mature. so when we went to the studio, the band was already confident with each song's sound, we were already familiar with it's form." champ shares. without even pausing for air, he continues,"in the recording, we didn't play favorites. each song was given the same amount of creative attention and effort to perfect. equal namin silang pinagbubuhusan ng oras. we wanted this album to be very special, we wanted the impact to be strong. we recorded the album in a very long one month. eight hours a day, four times a week. we were involved every step of the way up to the packaging.

roll simply puts is, "bantay sarado talaga yung album"

"there were a lot of moments in the studio when we figured out how to play a particular song right at the moment of recording. maraming dinadagdag. and we are very happy with the results." sheldon quickly adds. "the songs are very open to interpretation, and i hope that people 'feel' after listening to them.

and roll in his thougtful way,adds,"after listening to the album i want the listener to feel like he had read a book. it would be enough that the listeners understood the songs."

there's a blue sky waiting tomorrow

champ still feels a little dazed by everything."everything's happening really fast. with all that has been happening, the band sees it more as a challenge to justify the attention. to prove that we are worth the attention."

he recalls the s.o.p performance,"wala talaga ako sa comfort zone ko when we performed it with gabby eigenmann and janno gibbs.'broken sonnet' is a very personal song, and i have my own approach to singing it. baka hindi lang talaga ako sanay na may kasamang ibang kumakanta. but it was a great experience."

"before we performed, ogie alcasid gave us the thumbs-up sign form across the room and said,'pare, i love your song' it was such an honor to hear that. it made us want to be a better band."

only time will tell if hale, rock's currently most prmising padawans, will be around for the long haul.in the meantime, they are quite content with winning over fans one heart break at a time. for a band that generally writes music, which blur the line between melancholy and misery, i can;t help but wonder do they believe in happy endings?

"i haven't experienced it,"roll shrugs,"gagawin ko lahat para maging happy everyday, but everything's unsure. you never know what kind of ending you'll get. so hindi ko masasagot kasi hindi ko alam."

Shelodn's more optimistic,"i dont want to say'no' and so whatever happens, it will be okay. i believe in aboth a happy ending and a bad ending. but of course, we all want a happy one."

who rarely smiles, finally smiles,"most of our songs are sad pero halos lahat happy ang ending. the songs are like chapters of a book.'there's a blue sky waiting tomorrow' this is the bridgethat will lead us to our next album."

i should've known. the ending will never really mean as much as the tears, madness and music inbetween. stupid question.


telenovelas anyone???
roll:naabutan ko yung mga mexican telenovelas that are on after lunch. i pass the living room, tapos nakikita ko,"uy! ang gaganda!"

sheldon:hindi ako mahilig, pero kung meron man akong napanood na telenovela since day one kahit unintentional, it is anna luna. around grade 2 ako noon, at ayokong magsiesta, kaya ayon, nakikinood ako. nagkataon pa nun na yung isang character dun, kapitbahay pa namin. hehe

omnie:hindi rin ako hard-core nanonood pero natutuwa ako sa irene.
